Marius Of Rome

Sic infit - So it Begins.

Introducing our tale with the Latin equivalent of a meme is quite fitting. Gaius Marius began his epic journey in the late Roman Republic. Living for the first time from 157 to 86 BCE, upon his demise, his spirit finds a remarkably complicated universe. There, neither life nor death are one-and-done events, and Marius is soon launched on a leapfrogging journey through countless lives over dozens of centuries.

The death of an elderly World War Two veteran frees the drifting Marius into the present day, where, in the realm between lives, the spirit pauses, weary and timeworn. Is there any purpose to these lives, these centuries, he wonders, or is he doomed to wander aimlessly forever? Out of curiosity - and no small degree of boredom - he checks on the spirits who are accompanying him on his journey. Seeing how his cadre has - or has not - progressed on their treks may offer some perspective - or at least entertainment.

The chance sighting of an old enemy attracts Marius’s attention - the soul he knows as Sulla is once again alive and up to no good. Marius is not surprised, but instead of merely watching in disapproval, he decides to mix things up a bit this time. Spoiling his old adversary’s latest plot just might alleviate his cosmic boredom, but Marius will need help from the world of the living. There, he finds Fortuna, the goddess of fate in whom Marius no longer believes, has been very busy - a soul who loyally served in his legion long ago is now at the American embassy in Rome and is ideally placed to aid his former Consul. Castro would be perfect, and he is not alone; his beautiful girlfriend, an Italian archeologist, has a centuries-old secret of her own.

Brought together by Fate itself, the trio embarks on a struggle against forces none fully understand.

Part romance, part cautionary tale of greed and power, and all adventure, Marius of Rome - The Final Mile questions the very meaning of life and death and is a journey worth taking.
